Much Ado About Much Wenlock

Much WenlockMuch Wenlock has been under the spotlight, as Fido works on a PR and marketing plan to map out how this small Shropshire town can make the most of the fact that it is the birthplace of Dr William Penny Brookes, the founding father of the international Olympics.

It was in 1850 that Dr William Penny Brookes introduced an annual Olympian sports event to promote health and well-being.  Brookes’ vision and enthusiasm inspired French Baron Pierre de Coubertin to progress the modern Olympic movement as we now know it.

Fido PR has been appointed by Shropshire Destination Management Partnership to devise a tourism communications strategy that will elevate Much Wenlock to heightened prominence in the run up to London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Katie Foster, chair of the Shropshire Destination Management Partnership, says, “The story of Dr William Penny Brookes’ great contribution to today’s global phenomenon of the Olympic Games has gone too long untold.

“London 2012 provides us with a great opportunity to rectify this and really establish Much Wenlock’s position at the heart of the Olympic movement.  This is why we have brought Fido on board to advise on how best this can be achieved.”
